Review of The Hours (2002) by Jingbo W — 03 Apr 2009
I was disappointed to find that there were no universal themes connecting the lives of the three women in this film. They did have three things though: 1) Somehow connected to the story of Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf (who is actually unidentifiably played by Nicole Kidman), 2) they are all depressed, and 3) they all seem to have very strange, or are unsure of, their sexual orientations.
Because there were just specific themes scattered through one or two lives at a time and there wasn't much of a storyline or point to the story, it was difficult to follow and a challenge to watch.
I will say that the only thing that redeemed this film was the powerhouse performances from pretty much the entire cast. Do not see this film if thinking a lot when watching movies short-circuits your brain.
