Review of The Hours (2002) by Otageemeur L — 11 Feb 2012
Talking about "The Hours" is very very complicated... I don't know what I truly feel about the movie: it has a very dark, depressing feeling in it but I don't feel I did connect into this dark ambience.
However, the film is truly well-crafted, the actress/actors are terrific in their role, you truly believed in them. The story is interesting but has somehow a very deep meaning that could be hard to catch.
It is set into 3 different periods and we are following 3 women: Virginia Woolf a famous writer that believe herself mad (1923), Laura Brown a housewife who doesn't believe herself happy enough (1951) and Clarissa Vaughan that is hosting a party for one of her close friend Richard who won an award (2000).
The interesting part of the movie is definitely the parallel between each story knowing that Virginia Woolf is the writer of "Mrs. Dalloway", book that Laura is reading but also the name that Richard gives to Clarissa, being the hostess of an event, like Mrs.
Dolloway in the book... I believed the movie very clever but also very dark that could make it hard to follow for some people. IMO, it is a good movie but I had some troubles with far too depressive mood.
.. Definitely worth to watch!
