Review of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) by John P — 12 Apr 2008
The fourth (filmed) version of the Conan.
Doyle thriller, this 20th Century Fox production served to introduce Basil Rathbone to the world as - Mr. Sherlock Holmes, of 221 B Baker Street. Subsequent versions may be "better", story-wise; but Rathbone - hawklike, sharp, and aquiline - visually remains THE perfect.
Holmes, against whom all others must.
Strive to equal. Nigel Bruce makes an.
Affable Dr. Watson, not so bumbling here - and it's neat to see future Universal horror villains Lionel Atwill and cadaverous John Carradine lurking about. Stagey and sometimes moribund, the picture's sets are great (lotsa fog and papier-mache monoliths). Even the Hound is convincingly menacing. A three-star classic, mainly.
Because of the budding Rathbone-.
Holmes heritage.
Best Line (what else?):
"Oh, Watson - the needle!".
