Review of The Host (2015) by Alain L — 27 Dec 2013
So I've watched The Host and I have to say that....well....actors are good, not all of them, but they're good. Special effects are not bad but dammit, there's nothing in that story! And it's sad because it could have been a great tale, but here it's just something empty that is not logical and that goes in the emotional part when we don't need it. Andrew Niccol is a great director but I can't believe he made this film.
Things I regret.
1- The Logic of the story. If they are aliens going from planets to planets...this means they have a spaceship. So they have advanced technology, so...why the hell do they use cars and stuff to move?? Okay they are in some sort of bottles or idk what to fly to another planet but... didn't you think about this - how the hell the last guy goes home? If it recquires 2 people to make one leave the planet, at the end what happens for the last guy? NOT logical.
2- The bad guy...Diane Kruger's character? Seriously? Come on, you can't have Kruger has a pure big bad guy! There must a chief among those aliens and we see she's not one, so who the hell is the chief - he would have been a better bad guy than her character!
3- The love story...c'mon there's a war, A WAR, characters shouldn't care about who is who...they should only care about this : "you're with us you say, so you fight with us" it would have been better, because it would have been really interesting to see the cruelty in Melanie when she would ask Wandera to kill her own people and the tough decision this last has to take. + Jake Abel is in love with her...ok, but he acts like a teenager, he's a soldier - wld have been better if it was Wandera who was in love and not the opposite.
4- Canevas. Twist is good, but it's the only real good thing in the movie. You built the movie on a falling building. It means that first the beginning is total flashback - so we can't like the main characters because it is seen from character's vision, not an objective one - ours. 1h00 the story twist is that Kruger's character comes back...alone..and decides to fight the rebels. OK but it's not scary, we know they'll beat her. + One of the characters says that this war isn't logical...I don't know..things about this movie are so wrong but it could have been so good! I don't write this to say the movie's bad, I write this to help the ones who made it to understand their mistakes. So Andrew Niccol, sorry if I say your movie is not good, but it can happen, so just don't give up and keep working on this stuff, remake a sci-fi movie with aliens just like this one but not falling in what I call - the Stephenie Meyer's trap.
