Review of The Host (2013) by Alexander Z — 30 Apr 2015
The Host was unfairly skewered, and it is by no means a great movie. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is all the unexplained plot points that crop up throughout its running time and the rudimentary exploration of character motivations.
However, the rest is quite solid, if inconsistent. It's an odd outing for director Andrew Niccol, who has trended towards less thoughtful and more mainstream filmmaking recently, and is capable of so much more, as we saw in Gattaca and Lord of War.
