Review of The Host (2006) by Daniel S — 24 Sep 2011
An unusual movie that chooses to discard convention and thrust most of its emotional weight upon a preposterous relationship between comedy and drama that swings back and forth throughout the entire movie.
Although I will admit that I did laugh at times, I couldn't help but feel that I was laughing "at" the movie, not with it. The plot here is flimsy, the monster is nothing more than a dangerous footnote, and while the strange balance between serious and comical does occasionally work, its infrequent successes aren't enough to keep the movie afloat.
At best, this film would be a hesitant recommendation. 4/10.
