Review of The Host (2006) by Bheema D — 25 Jul 2014
It aims way higher than any other Korean monster movie, but it doesn't land as far as it wants to. Ladies and gentlemen, dark comedy does not mean having insanely serious scenes tarnished by stupid piss jokes.
The Host tries to be the original Godzilla and a survival movie at the same time, but it doesn't realize that by trying to be something else you lose your sense of self, and eventually remind everybody of the other movies they could be watching.
But then, on occasion, it offers those few moments where you can see how it influenced Cloverfield and other recent monster movies with it's character-driven story that, while not enthralling, at least gets you hooked.
While it feels more like 3 hours then it's actual 2 hours, the monster design is great and the final fight is awesome, so if you're in the mood, it should satisfy you.
