Review of The Host (2006) by Jonathan B — 03 Oct 2014
The Host continues to hold up well nearly a decade later, and it's another testament to Bong Joon-ho's skills as a director and storyteller. Yes, the CG is as terrible now as it was then, but it's not as prevalent as you remember and becomes a non-factor.
That's because the monster movie is genuinely exciting and has some good less-is-more action sequences, yet it's the other touches that continually stick out - the well developed character dynamics, offbeat humor and socio-political commentary.
It's a well-rounded package that culminates in an emotional finale, the effectiveness of which I had forgotten about, showing why The Host remains one of the best monster stories of the 2000s.
