Review of The Horse Whisperer (1998) by Jo S — 17 Sep 2007
I love it. It doesn't hold up over multiple viewings as well as some films, but one can tell from every frame of it that it is a film with more love invested in it than most. The two problems I have with it are that Redford gave him himself too much power and couldn't bring himself to cut more and the performances are very uneven.
It's not that the film is miscast, but there are times when one believes the characters and times when one doesn't. This could be indicative of script problems, but I actually tend to think it was performance in this case.
Kristin Scott Thomas is definitely one of favorite modern actresses. She's so beautiful and talented it's ridiculous. Seeing her makes me wish Altman and Merchant were still alive for some reason as well.
