Review of The Homesman (2014) by Victoria L — 25 Mar 2015
I think a lot of people watching this movie missed the big picture. These women were expected to give their all to their family, farm etc and receive nothing in return. Most of the insanity came from depression, postpartum, death of a parent. Loss of children. Today to lose any of these things we head straight for the Zoloft. These woman had no one to turn too. The caring spouse could only continue to dump on them, You don't love me!! you never loved me! or demand sex to have a boy etc... Hilary Swank was tough but underneath she was just as fragile and breakable. She wanted love and thought as is drummed into a woman's head especially back then.. be pretty, have property. My problem with the film was how Mary was alone out there to begin with. Most woman would travel with a husband to reach "paradise" so I completely agreed when.
TLJ told that young woman don't marry some guy and let him drag you out to some lame promised land. But how Mary got there never is discussed. Yes she takes on the care of these woman as being christian unlike the Pastor or the other woman and men of the congregation which is also telling in the hypocrisy today as well as then. I think Mary was convinced that she wouldn't be lonely if she found a lover/husband as she really didn't have any idea exactly why those women lost their minds.. realizing that having a lover/husband doesn't make you less lonely or have a friend I've come to the conclusion that's why she gave up hope.. Little girls read Cinderella and hope for prince charming... It is a debbie downer type movie and if you expect it to not be at the end.. don't watch.. but it is what it is.. Life sucks... some survive and some it just crushes.. I thought it was great.. I love TLJ and yes I wish Mary would have found some happiness.. oh well.
