Review of The Homesman (2014) by Doug C — 18 May 2015

I think so much of that which motivates humankind is revealed in this film. First how by nature a man or a woman will simply insist on having things according to their own will and if not is inclined to action for the intent of making it happen ...pride in bowing to one's own will as if a god whose right it is.

The other part of man's make up is what I am more and more persuaded to be the law of God written in our hearts. Though it might be buried deep in repression, I think it is there in every one, somehow just knowing that one ought be merciful to others in the same way one always knows it would be wrong for others to not be to them also.

The way it all works out though in human kind appears to me to as pathetic beyond our ability to tears. Little puny gods is the way I am thinking we manifest ourselves in the whole of us ...some sparkling examples of the good that ought to be can be seen I think, but even then one ought not to look too close lest one see the selfishness even it those things...people thinking themselves "good" amongst the evil as if things would not be different if conditions and circumstances did not allow for the life we have.

I can not insist that I am right in my thinking (that is claiming righteousness), it is however at least the most honest obeservation I can make from the blessed cards I have been dealt ...I dare not assume I would not also be bitter as those I see as bitter, had I been dealt their hands. My only hope is that somehow there is a righteous and merciful God who for some unfathomable reason has elected to grant to me something of His own righteous perspective ...and if not that MAYBE somehow, some way He will correct me in thinking....that somehow I might be given at least a heart to truly WANT righteousness, even to my own hurt!? Even to painful chastisement (spanking) of God for my ultimate good? Lord willing!? The movie shows individuals also presuming to have the righteous judgment of God to literally meat out justice to the unmerciful. What is it when we rejoice to see such in a film? The "bad ones" getting what they "have coming to them"?

Is it not the desire for Right to prevail finally, written in our hearts? And when a film featuring such is approved of the majority of viewers (people from such varied cultures of peoples..."every nation and kindred and tongue" ? Might that not also hint to the work of God in every man's heart? The law written on the hearts of man?

Well that is my review to take or to leave...I can not insist. Only if it strikes you as maybe being right, then consider of what I wrote above if you watch the film ...and even as you reflect on them around you and in your own mirror?
