Review of The Homesman (2014) by Wayne M — 25 Jan 2016
Tommy Lee Jones is an under rated film maker and his latest is a fine film about hardship, perseverance and determination. His films are authentic and true, without artifice. The Homesman is set in 19th century Nebraska, a harsh and forbidding place full of death and sadness.
Hilary Swank plays a lonely woman who is entrusted with the task of transporting 3 women, turned crazy by the harsh environment, to a safe home. She is joined by Briggs, a true scoundrel and it is a tale of redemption and survival.
This is a sometimes bleak film, but it also has moments of humour and Prieto's cinematography is truly stunning. A poignant and enlightening film that serves its subject well.
