Review of The Home Song Stories (2007) by Shana C — 02 Sep 2008
A mother whose good intentions lead her into taking a path towards self-destruction, leaving emotional devastation in her wake. Apart from being a critical exploration of mother-child relationships it also portrays the difficulties of adapting to an alien environment.
I really enjoyed this film--aesthetically it was amazing, and although it bordered on melodrama I think it suited the plot. Joan Chen is brilliant as the sensual, difficult but sympathetic character, Rose.
Credit also to the amateur young actors Joel Lok and Irene Chen; they really pulled the film together.
