Review of The Holy Mountain (1973) by Adam C — 17 Feb 2008
This is the sort of movie that, when you try to explain it, ends up sounding morbidly bizarre--which it is, but it is also a Great Movie. After thirty years, it is apparent that the spiritual journey which Jodorowsky wanted to take viewers on is largely composed of silly New Ageisms, but the incredible purity of cinematic invention which he employed to create this journey still shines today.
I haven't seen El Topo yet, but this film alone puts Jodorowski on par with such masters as Fellini and Bunuel. Also, by the way, if you watch it on DVD, Jodorowsky's commentary is excellent and notably charming.
