Review of The Hollars (2016) by Movie M — 29 Aug 2018
Now that John Krasinski (Jim from "The Office") has become critically acclaimed behind the camera for his recent work with "A Quiet Place", I wanted to take a look back at some of his earlier pieces that no one really knows existed.
Regardless of the ratings from the fans and critics on this site, my wife and I found it be very down to earth and small school charming. John also stars as the key character, also named John, who has to head back to his little home town and his somewhat estranged family after news breaks that his mother has been diagnosed with a severe brain tumor.
Regardless of the downtrodden concept, shenanigans ensue as he reconnects with his neurotic father (Richard Jenkins), his also borderline unstable brother (Sharlto Copley), and a mother who is the least screwed up in the head of anybody for how much is physically wrong with it (Margo Martindale).
Nice support in a suitably dramedic sense from Charlie Day, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Anna Kendrick, The Hollars comes across as deeply relatable smile-piece and fueled along by a perfectly tuned soundtrack that tickles around the heart & soul.
