Review of The Hollars (2016) by Brad S — 25 Mar 2017
I really liked this film and was surprised as I hadn't heard of it before. It is directed by and stars John Krasinski with a stellar supporting cast including Margo Martindale, Richard Jenkins, Charlie Day, and Sharlto Copley and Anna Kendrick.
It is a small story about a mother who discovers she has a brain tumour and the dysfunctional family gathers to support her. I feel the film really nails a lot of the smaller moments, little looks speak volumes at times in place of speeches.
The film is both funny, and dramatic at times. The critics didn't rate it very high, and I expect they called it predictable and cloying, which isn't necessarily untrue, but a skilled cast makes it compelling and worth watching in my opinion.
Seek it out.
