Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) by Michael H — 21 Feb 2015
While this is possibly the most action-packed Middle Earth movie so far, The Desolation Of Smaug is still prone to some of the triteness and wheel-spinning that An Unexpected Journey fell foul of: we all kind of know where the story is going, and we're only taken part of the way there.
It does zip along at a far more enjoyable clip than its predecessor, but this isn't entirely a good thing: the story just doesn't pick up quite enough steam over two and a half hours for the inevitable cliffhanger to earn any real weight; It's neither a whimper nor a bang, just a shrug.
See you in a year, I guess.
