From the blatant wink cameo at the camera from director Peter Jackson starting 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' to political rumblings and character meandering, there is little superfluous action to spice up an overstretched mediocre chapter in the saga.
Arriving late in the film, the dragon Smaug itself is the episode's saviour.
