Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) by James S — 04 Jun 2015
'The Hobiit, Battle of the Five Armies' finally brings our second visit to Middle Earth to an end. Rating each of the Hobbit films has been somewhat of a challenge, possibly due to its similarities yet stark differences to the infamous Lord of the Rings series. This final adventure is no exception, particularly as it revolves almost entirely around a single battle.
The action immediately picks up from where we left it, following Smaug's release from the mountain. I thought this was spectacularly directed, and particularly liked Jackson's decision to open the movie with it. To an extent I was disappointed with the outcome of this sequence, although recognise that they did have a script to follow.
The build up to our central battle consequently begins, and to be honest does not last long. Our five armies are quickly introduced and are soon at each other's throats. I thoroughly enjoyed watching each distinct army take to the battlefield, although did question why certain clans were heavily involved. The elves for example had an odd claim to the mountain.
I was also not particular convinced by the sudden illness that Thorin developed due to his kingly status. Whilst very reminiscent of the effects the ring has on its owner, it again seemed like a convenient situation, which expectantly he also managed to overcome.
Due to the dominance that this battle scene has, I am inclined to judge the entire film based on this, rather than what a typical action/ adventure film should portray. Were I to do this I would judge it to be a very good action film. Action sequences were slick, creative and exciting, whilst I enjoyed their ability to put key characters in dangerous situations.
