Review of The Hoax (2006) by Eoin H — 19 Dec 2007
A very enjoyable movie about a truly extraordinary story.
Hallstrom realises on the screen Clifford Irving's (Richard Gere) web of lies with several nimble directorial brush strokes. Indeed, the sundry memory instances play out brilliantly.
This is a curiously light hearted cinematic approach to what could have been a ponderous brooding thriller in someone like Oliver Stone's hands. I'm not entirely sure that the film is consequently better or worse but its very entertaining and finally finds Gere in serviceable (but admittedly not great) form as a leading man.
