Richard Gere has never been an actor that I've paid much attention to in the past. A certain kind of general cockiness has kept Mr. Gere and I across the room from each other. That doesn't mean that I haven't found myself watching a movie he's in, but he never had a big enough part to sell me on his acting ability.

Low and behold, I'm finally interested in a tale that stars the man. After the film had ended, I came to the conclusion that he can actually convey character. Maybe I'm mistaken, as the character of Cliff Irving IS a mild prick.

The Hoax does contain elements of genuine suspense if you already haven't heard the story. What surprised me most, which is odd for a movie based on a novel/true events, is how well it kept the film moving along.

It doesn't hurt that the supporting cast does a wonderful job of bringing their characters into this world of lies with a distinct personality. Alfred Molina deserves special notice for playing a noble, if not an incredibly timid, man that takes his chances and regrets it in the end.

Julie Delpy, who has had a spotless record with me, seems a little out of place here. She is the one who actually suffers from the writing and never wows you. Don't forget that you are going to get some edutainment out of this, too.

Overall, the film succeeds with little modesty and a good old-fashioned text "where are they now?" ending. An interesting journey that won't leave a bad taste in your mouth. Until we meet again, Richard Gere, until we meet again.
