Review of The Hoax (2006) by J D — 14 Jan 2008
A stellar cast and a great story combine to make a great movie. Richard Gere has always been hit or miss with me, but he hits it hard on this one. He's able to make a fairly unlikeable cad into a fairly sympathetic character, and more importantly to the story, an enigmatic character as well.
Alfred Molina was great, playing a nervous shlub, not the kind of character he generally plays. There's one fantastic shot of Gere in front of a large photo of Howard Hughes that is chilling and memorable, and pretty much sums up the movie: a larger-than-life figure who can control a man, even make him question his own sanity, even though he's nothing more than a distant public figure.
Clifford Sterling is really a bargain basement Hughes, with the same thirst for power and ambition, but with less talent and character. Excellent flick.
