Review of The Hoax (2006) by Stephen C — 11 Feb 2008
After recent sickly sweet movies Director Lasse Hallstrom delivers on the promise he showed with his first feature MY Life as A dog.
Richard Gere (excellent)plays Clifford Irving a man who pursuades a large publishing house that he has gained Access to the reclusive millionare Howard Hughes.
Aided by Alfred Molina (who is the best thing in the film) he build a web of lies which grows bigger with every con they pull.
The story never drags as we See Gere and Molina tangle not only with Hughes but with the US goverment.
Gere potrays Irving as aman prepared to risk every thing to prove his story is genuine.
Even when events spiral totally out of control he still has hope.
The supporting cast are great and its a shame that this film has been overlooked in the Oscar stakes as the 2 leads deliver career best performances.
A little gem which I advise you to seeek out on DVD.
