Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Taylor C — 08 May 2008
DVD cover art should be an indication of what an awesome ride you are in for with the movie you are about to devote an hour and a half to. If The Hitcher's cover is any indication, it might seem that tradition might be followed with the actual movie.
However this wishful thinking ends the moment you pop this sucker in. The film follows Jim? (C. Thomas Howell) who almost immediately regrets picking up hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer). Let me just say how little screen presence Howell has.
The man basically has one look throughout the entire movie, I mean I serious think that the man just might be related to Lance Guest. Anyway the film is boring, no freaking joke. I mean in many other films this is a sign that the crap is gonna hit the fan in a moment soon to come.
Well in this one that moment never arrives. It's just gets more and more absurd as it glides along. Pacing and absurdity isn't this movies only faults, acting and writing is without a doubt is two of the biggest ones.
The films principal cast and supporting cast have questionable dedication to their roles, almost all of them to quote another user are puss$%@ and carry no charisma, let alone screen presence. All of them are way too subdued for their own good.
Writing is probably this films biggest crack. The plot is so badly written that its nearly intolerable to watch, so much so that when the remants of a actions scene show up, it's like someone farted in the seat next to you.
Even though The Hitcher's DVD cover visually boasts a suspense thriller, the film comes way short of that prediction.
