Review of The Hitcher (1986) by K S — 12 Mar 2009
The Hitcher is just one of those films that make you think "what would I do in this situation?". Any film that can instantly become part of the daily leixcon is easily a classic. Whenever I see a person walking up the interstate thumbing for a ride, my first instinct is to pull over but then I think of this film. The idea of willingly allowing a possible John Ryder in my car makes my palms get sweaty.
The concept is pretty original and on that alone it's a strongly recommended film, even for non-horror fans. The obvious "wrong man" scenario (which nods to Hitchcock) is at work as well as an iconic performance by Rutger Hauer as the psychotic highway murderer, John Ryder. There is also a homosexual undertone to this film as well, particularly from the perspective of Hauer. I can think of worse ways to spend 95 minutes.
