Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Deb S — 28 May 2011
If you have been unfortunate in seeing the 2007 remake of The Hitcher with Sean Bean, please attempt to scrub this from your mind. It was a terrible and unnecessary remake of a rather impressive, face paced Thriller with some classic Horror sensibilities.
It stars Rutgur Hauer as John Ryder, a hitchhiker with one thing on his mind: MURDER! He hitches a lift with Jim a driver delivering a car. Here starts chase after chase as Jim tries to lose his murderous stalker.
Rutger Hauer makes this film. He gives a fabulous and rather scary performance as Ryder. The script is solid and the interactions between Ryder and Howell are superb with some memorable lines. It's a very atmospheric film, full of tension and worthy of a watch purely on Hauerâ??s unsettling performance alone.
The direction is top notch and it looks superb throughout with some great camera work. It also has a great endingâ?¦ I won't give anything away so why not see it for yourself? This has always been a film that sits in my mind as a true cult classic.
