Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Bloodmarsh K — 26 Jul 2011
The first 10 minutes created expectation but what followed was too ridiculous for words. The hitcher (Rutger Hauer) stalked the main protagonist during the whole movie, popping up every 5 to 10 minutes as if he had supernatural powers, he also kills people from from a driving car with a single shot in the head and he shoots a helicopter from the air with a small gun, as if he is some superman who never misses. Also there is never an explanation why the hitcher is acting like a killer machine.
In between that we see cars crashing, policemen acting like morrons and also a gas station exploding. It's a violent crashfest and for a thriller it's not suspenseful at all, we know the villain will turn up every time again and again anyway so there is little surprise when he does (with a massacre every ten minutes but always sparing the protagonist).
The plot is shockingly bad, devoid of any humour and almost at exploitation level but I still give it one star because the cinematographer did a good job. Not recommended at all unless you like brainless action movies.
