Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Guy G — 07 Nov 2011
[D+/45] Rutger Hauer is very scary as an omniscient, omnipotent Teutonic psychopath. In fact, he's pretty much everything this lamely-twisted "Duel"-inspired thriller has to offer. It's mostly competent as a mindless run-about about killers on the road and framed innocents, but also exceedingly silly with its ludicrous recurring turns of coincidence and highly improbable situations and characters. And, of course, no American maniac movie would be complete without the usual unnecessary and cheap depiction of people with Southern accents acting like complete monkeys.
Way too absurd to be really frightening. But Hauer gives it a go, and is memorable in his own right.
