Review of The History Boys (2006) by Jim C — 28 Mar 2010
What a film! 'The History Boys' leapt right onto my list of top 10 movies. As much as I loved 'Dead Poets Society', this film eclipses it in every way and that diminishes the former in no way.
The dialog is witty as it can be only when spoken in authentic English by authentic English folk. Richard Griffiths plays the part of the tweedy history professor so perfectly you wonder if he didn't write the part from his own life, and Frances De La Tour waltzes through her performance as art teacher with an ease and grace that's so hard to find in American cinema.
The movie flows under the direction of Nicholas Hytner like a broad river in the English countryside. There was not a single weak link in the acting chain and the casting for the roles of the boys was flawless.
I'll remember Samuel Barnett and will look for more of his work. I know I'll see this movie again.. And again. I highly recommend 'The History Boys'.
