Review of The Hills Run Red (2009) by Gary B — 23 Dec 2009
Disappointing attempt at a clever slasher film. The good news is that production values are good, acting is decent enough, and the direction is mostly adequate. The lighting is well done, but not terribly imaginative.
The bad news? Well first of all the story is a copy of the "Master of Horror" episode "Cigarette Burns" and is not even remotely as thoughtful or evocative. So while the concept has been hijacked, that doesn't mean that the film couldn't still be interesting.
Sadly, it isn't I won't "spoil" it, but the twists at the end are so far beyond believable that I laughed out loud. In order for the twist to work, they would have had to predict Tyler's existence as well as his determination and every move he would make.
I did like that for a moment the film seemed like it was going to invite the audience to think about the difference between horror and torture-porn. However, the question is left hanging and the film forgets about it almost after it is articulated.
Sad.
