Review of The Hills Have Eyes (2006) by Adam H — 23 Apr 2010
Seldom does a remake come along for me that conquers the original. There are exceptions (notably Cronenberg's "The Fly" & Carpenter's "The Thing"). It starts out as almost a carbon copy of Craven's original, but makes a smart detour by using nuclear fallout as both allegory & the backstory for the villains.
The final act pulls a complete 180 by having blue collar Americans wage hardcore cold-blooded revenge against their attackers. Some of the cast are a bit 2-D, but character actor Ted Levine is always a treat to watch (yeah, the same guy that played wiener tucking psycho Buffallo Bill---shocking!).
Amazing that the relatively young Aja has more tricks up his sleeve than Platinum Dunes does.
