Review of The Hills Have Eyes (1977) by Voo B — 03 Apr 2010
The Manson family and Deliverance inform this cautionary tale about looking for silver mines on desolate military target practice land. The decisions enacted by so many of the characters defy good sense.
I find that usually takes me out of a film. The thrill of this story is that people are trapped in a place where predators are trying to kill them. There is definitely a menacing atmosphere. Craven makes an interesting decision to give the cannibalistic pursuers lots of screen time.
In doing so, their power their ability to frighten is diminished.
