Review of The Hero of Color City (2014) by Jason M — 05 Oct 2014
The Hero of Color City.
Initial Reaction: The city that's truly color blind.
Main Characters? Yellow, Blue, Green: Three crayons voiced by Christina Ricci, Wayne Brady and Jess Harnell.
Plot Summary.
It starts off with several of the crayons out in the real world. They are getting back to the crayon box - and into their own world where crayons live the high life.
But Yellow gets lost on the way back to the box, and meets up with several odd characters - a large guy and a small gnat. The guy and the gnat are looking to be colored in (they're just white outlines with a few features drawn in) They find out from Yellow about the Crayon Town, and they go there to get colored.
When they get into the secluded world of the Crayons, they go up to the source of the color and try to get the color there. But the color won't stay on, so they block off the color from the rest of Color World.
This causes a serious problem with the Crayons. If they don't restore the flow of color to the city, the crayons will lost their color and cease to exist. They send a crack (or is it cracked team?) to stop the guy and the gnat.
SCORING.
Main Characters.
The crayons have a lot of character in them, and each color has some personality that suits the color (yellow is scared, green is smart, and blue is smooth). But I get the feeling they overdid the personality a bit. SCORE: 7.
Supporting Cast.
The other crayons have the same problem - they over do one personality aspect. As for the guy and the gnat, they're okay, but I can't see why anyone or any crayon would be scared of them- they come across as being nice and friendly. SCORE: 5.
Plot.
The journey's okay, but I think there's parts of the trip the crayons take goes on for a bit too long, and the climax isn't much of a climax - it's more of a misunderstanding. SCORE: 4.
Originality.
This film tries to separate itself by showing the secret life of crayons. But there's another film that does something similar, and that's Toy Story. SCORE: 6.
Violence Factor.
The big guy does an impersonation of King Kong, and the Mayor gets hurt in a plane crash, but there's really nothing too scary about this film. SCORE: 8.
Other Moral Issues.
This film tries to show the importance of being brave, and working together to solve a big problem. But this problem could've been avoided in the first place with both sides just sitting down and talking. SCORE: 5.
Final Score (out of 60): 35 % Score: 58.33%.
It's not the train wreck I was dreading - it will be fun for kindergartners. But anyone outside that demographic is not going to find anything to like.
