Review of The Help (2011) by Victoria B — 17 Mar 2013
Well-acted for sure, but it's overly focused on the uninteresting well-to-do white girls than the characters the film is supposedly attempting highlight. Davis is again excellent, as are Spencer and Chastain.
Their characters' stories are interesting, and while the film is not insincere, it's totally missing the point. Additionally, the tone of the film is confused between a family film and Oscar bait and thus not succeeding as either.
As someone who grew up in the South and the effects of this period of history still very much lingering despite insistence otherwise, it seems like a well-intended apology rather than an actual drama with weight.
A shame too, because it's not ineptly made, just poorly conceived.
