Review of The Help (2011) by John W — 16 Jun 2013
The Help is a dynamic and interesting drama documenting pre-Civil Rights Movement southern culture and racial tension. The maids are by far the most impressively well developed and interesting characters.
The young women of the bridge club are intentionally created to be well polished representations of negative southern characteristics, such as racism and cattiness. Emma Stone is a somewhat impressive star who sets change in motion is a small Mississippi town.
There's nothing truly novel about the picture in terms of having a lasting affect on film, but it is well written and well acted, making it one of the better tearjerkers in the past decade.
