Review of The Help (2011) by Amanda — 18 Jan 2016
A very enjoyable, heartwarming and emotional film. If there's a weakness it's that the white community are a bit too reasonable and self aware. You feel the angst of the black community but it's not gut wrenching.
On the plus side it still gets the message across but leaves you with cautious optimism rather than hopeful pessimism. If you are white that's probably better than a vicarious and self righteous emotional connection that satisfies the conscience but not history.
Above all, it's well produced, well acted, a delight to the eyes and with a good balance of humour. It also manages to connect you with the characters without being patronising or sanctimonious.
