Review of The Heiress (1949) by Mark S — 15 Dec 2008
Not what I was expecting. Maybe it's because I've not yet read any stories by Henry James, but I imagined this to be a comedy of manners set in "the age of innocence". To an extent, that's exactly what it is, but there's a sad and bitter edge to the story that completely took me by surprise.
Olivia de Havilland was deserving of her Oscar and both Montgomery Clift and Ralph Richards provide strong support.
