Good performances from all involved, especially Giamatti, but the story takes way too long to get going. Honestly, I had a hard time mustering enthusiasm for any of the characters and had to force myself to finish watching it.
Maybe the obsessional hawk training works better on a metaphorical level if you're reading the source material for this movie - the book by Harry Crews.
