Review of The Haunting (1963) by Grace A — 27 Oct 2007
This movie is the scariest I have ever seen. It benefits from being based on an excellent story by America's under-appreciated horror story master--Shirley Jackson, who on her worst day could write the predictable King and Koontz under the table.
The incomparable Julie Harris captures the heroine, who may be haunted, who may be mad, who may be both, excellently. I bought this when it came out on VHS and tried to watch it by myself at night. I couldn't.
I had to wait until morning. There aren't too many films that have that sort of impact.
