Review of The Haunting (1963) by ?Eljko M — 27 Mar 2009
Not one of the great films, in my humble opinion, but very good, and not only in comparison to the other movies in the genre. There are some very innovative and bold touches to it: camera work is excellent and unusual, especially considering when the movie was made; the subtle hints of latent lesbianism, not so unknown in the works of art dealing with supernatural themes ('Carmilla', a novella by Sheridan LeFanu, is one example), are very skillfully, meaningfully and unobtrusively incorporated into the story; the story itself constantly offers twofold possibilities of interpretation, reminiscent of Henry James's wonderful novella 'The Turn of the Screw'.
... It's horror with brains and soul, something we don't get to see so often, unfortunately.
