Review of The Haunting (1963) by Georgieboy M — 21 Oct 2011
Lets put this in the right context, this is a 60's film. The terror was different in those moments, nothing to do with the gore and killing that floods the most of the horror films this days, with some exceptions. Personally I feel more close to this kind of terror. Is more surreptitious, like the horror should be. you don't fear the supernatural because is something tangible but something that is occult, something that you don't know what is or how face it.
This film has that characteristic, the invisibility, the characters know or at least feel that something is wrong in the house but they are not sure what it is. As the character of Theo says: "Haven't you notice that nothing in this house seems to move until you look away and then you catch something out of the corner of your eye" . Thats the essence of the picture.
