Review of The Haunting (1963) by Tor M — 17 Jul 2018
A scientist is doing some research at a old house that's said to be haunted. He brings two women with him - one is known to be clairvoyant, one is unique with psychic abilities - even if she is not so sure about it herself.
There are indeed some spooky stuff going on here, especially at night. Scary sounds, banging noises and slamming doors. Everyone there is quite sure that the house is "alive" and won't let them leave. At least not until it has gotten a new soul.
This is a very classic haunted house flick. It's artisticly very good. Great usage of sound, camera and effects. The story itself is too slow moving and with almost two hours of playtime it get's too flat. It's never scary, no jumpscares or anything, but the atmosphere is rather chilly and mysterious.
A rather solid build up ends in a long wait for nothing and the cool characters done by great actor jobs rearly gets the time to really shine. I'm guessing if you scare easily from supernatural things it may be a bit more up your alley, since there are some rather chilling scenes like the hand holding one.
6 out of 10 spiral stairs.
