Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Brad S — 22 Apr 2016

This one was pretty disappointing to me. Tarantino is so talented, he's a fantastic writer, knows how to expertly set-up shots, and gets great performances from his actors, but it's his story sensibilities that I take issue with.

There is a consistent thread throughout all his films, even the ones he wrote but didn't direct, of gratuitous violence, extreme racist language, misogyny and sadistic tendencies. I really think he could do without all all those aspects, and create a masterpiece.

If it was an occasional film, then I may not be as bothered by it, but it is just about every film. One of my favourites, is one that a lot of people think is his weakest, and that's "Jackie Brown".

Tarantino focuses on the story, and tones down the negative aspects I highlighted. In any case, "The Hateful Eight" didn't work for me, but 2 things I did enjoy about it were the Ultra Panavision 70mm cinematography and the excellent score by Ennio Morricone which deservedly won an Oscar.
