Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Aaron M — 23 Jul 2018
Tedious snuff film without an ounce of wit to redeem it. On top of the mountains of exposition and rehashing of events better left implied, there was a jarring narrator's voice that showed up maybe 3 times to tell us what we were seeing on the screen.
Also, look. I know it's nostalgic, but this film did not need 3 "chapters". That should have been the first clue this needed to be pared down. It's not even a character study. It's just a bunch of crude stereotypes stuck in a room, swearing, killing, and jerking themselves off.
Just because you talk really slowly doesn't mean you're having an insight worth sharing. And no, the cinematography and music are not so wonderful that they "save" a story this grimy and pointless.
If you want to see a less self-indulgent variation of the extended dinner party gone wrong, may I suggest Rene Clair's "And Then There Were None instead?".
