Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Jenna I — 01 May 2016
I strangely enjoyed this one, and I think it had more to do with the pacing than anything else. I've been disappointed with Tarantino lately, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found Hateful Eight was basically just a much longer version of the best scene in Inglorious Basterds- when the Nazi officers are playing their drinking game. The whodunit structure, the excellent Morricone score and the commitment to that feeling of a time and place really carried this movie for me.
That said, certain scenes were entirely unnecessary (re: Samuel L Jackson's speech/flash back about Bruce Dern's son, or the fact that this was shot in 70mm?), totally undercut what made the movie great (that scene with the narrator who came out of nowhere) and the movie did go on a bit too long. Jennifer Jason Leigh really shines in this one though, and I loved her love of violence.
