Review of The Hate U Give (2018) by Andra M — 24 Oct 2018
I have read this novel with my students since it came out, so I have probably read it more than the average person. With that being said I was disappointed. There were so many elements that were left out that made me feel like this was almost a different story from the one in the novel.
If I watched the movie by itself I would like it, but when I compare it to the deep dive that is the novel it just feels surface and shallow. I waited for half of the movie to meet DeVante and he never showed up!!! He was a huge part of the book! I thought the character Chris was cast poorly, but that could just be because he didn't fit the picture in my head.
The ending is COMPLETELY different and what the heck happened with Iesha? They just didn't give us the details that made the story so great. I hope this helps my students see that movies and books are usually worlds apart and very few are able to move from the screen to the page without losing some of what made them such beautiful stories to begin with.
I am glad it is getting good reviews and that people are watching it because it is important, it just strayed too far from the book for me.
