Review of The Happytime Murders (2018) by Samuel M — 25 Aug 2018
An absolutely soulless, boring, mostly unfunny movie that had so much potential. Either the film is very raunchy for the sake of it or it'll just cut to long boring stretches where it's trying so hard to be serious, for the most part neither really worked.
A lot of it feels so dated and the film sadly tends to forget about elements that they actually could've gone somewhere cool with. I honestly don't know what went wrong here, there's barely any sense of creativity which is insane given the amount of creative people involved, a lot of it is just boring and cringeworthy, it goes for the lowest of the low.
The acting is good for the most part (though there is some people that just are completely going through the motions here), the puppeteering is fantastic, the cinematography is really good, there is some laughs to be had and the first like 15 minutes or so, minus the very childish humor, wasn't completely terrible as it got into the lead pretty well but overall this is a bad film.
It's really hard to enjoy something with not much sense of life and really bad jokes, as a die hard fan of The Jim Henson Company this just makes me sad. We deserve better.
