Review of The Happytime Murders (2018) by Kurt M — 14 Dec 2018
A few months ago, a red band trailer for this film came out and set the internet on fire. Unapologetic, twisted and completely out of the realm in which we've seen puppet/Muppet characters before, this offered something so unique and embraced the hell out of it.
I'll flat out say this now - this movie is savagely funny and hands down one of the funniest of the year IF you can handle seeing some raunchy and off the cuff shit.
I have a pretty sick and twisted sense of humour so this was right up alley, but be warned this isn't for everyone.
Taking pieces from buddy cop movies like Bad Boys or Lethal Weapon , the plot revolves around two former partners (McCarthy and a puppet) and is the foundation of the movie. The murder mystery intertwined between the relationship of the two main characters is fine but passable. And it's due to that kind of 'bumbling around' and not fully embracing the fact it's a hard R puppet comedy that lost me at points.
NOW, not to say this is a bad movie. Because when it stops being straight edge and gets back to its ruthless, no holding back perverted puppet comedy - it's insanely funny and packs some hard laughs that made me cry. It's because of those parts of the movie that I really did like this overall. I actually waited on doing my review to let some of the jokes settle in my brain and digest and a C is what Happytime deserves due to the fact it set out to make me laugh, and it did exactly that.
I hope this movie finds life somewhere, somehow because a sequel to this could push the boundaries even further and I would see it.
Grade : C.
