Review of The Handmaid's Tale (1990) by Scott W — 23 May 2007
I thought that this was a very good movie. Not as good as the book but few are. This is a not really sci-fi tale about a time in the future when disease has caused few women to be able to become pregnant.
The nation has turned to the church believing this sterility to be an act of god. The state has taken up arms for the church. In the end the nation has become a fascist state. I thought of this movie after watching V for Vendetta the other night.
The two are different themes on a similar point. The acting in this movie is first rate. Natascha Richardson as the protaganist is top drawer. Faye Dunaway is as good as ever, and Robert Duvall, well Robert Duvall is as always, masterful.
