Review of The Hallow (2015) by Michael M — 03 Dec 2015
A pretty straightforward movie if ever there was one. Couple goes to house in the woods, doesn't listen to locals, bad stuff happens. Think Evil Dead but with Celtic mythology rather than deadites, it's kinda' like that.
But for such a simple premise the movie is so damn good. It's unrelentingly creepy, excruciatingly tense, and profoundly creative. I love taking the fairy mythology and showing its creepy side, it's a side that exists in the mythos but we seldom see.
Part of me wishes they would have gone more into the monsters world showing their motives and culture, but then again if they explained things it may have minimized the creepy factor, so I can't really fault them for not doing so.
A pretty simple film, but the most effective of horror are, and this is one of the best horror films I've seen in a long time.
